Holborn Dining Rooms

After the raging success of our Afternoon Tea event, Sarah, Megan, Fiona and I all made plans to see each other again, and Sarah, as per usual, had an amazing suggestion for the night's activities.

Welcome to Holborn Dining Rooms. Yesterday was their 'soft opening' night, which meant we got to enjoy their offerings with 50% off. A serious win. We started, of course, with wine.

Holborn Dining Feb 14

We decided to go for the house red, which was superb, so much so that we put away two bottles.

Holborn Dining Feb 14

We ordered the charcuterie, which I fully recommend, sliced meats are awesome, these ones particularly so.

And for mains, we all ordered hunks of meat, specifically the lamb chops, roast chicken with mushrooms and steaks. Sides were chips and sprouted broccoli.

Happily fed, we finished off the wine, bid a sad farewell to Fiona, and wandered into Covent Garden, where Megan insisted on having our picture taken in front of a window of belts.

Holborn Dining Feb 14

Why not. We ended up in La Perla drinking strawberry daiquiris and dancing like idiots to Mambo No 5. A good night!

Borough Market and V&A

When I worked in Paris, there was one girl in my office who was always so lovely to chat to, so, when I left, I happily told her that whenever she was in London, she had to let me know. And so, she did! Pressure was on for me to think of some good London things to show her...and the weather was NOT on my side...but I did my best - starting with lunch at Borough Market.

We bought a couple of sticks of this cheesy olive bread from Bread Ahead - recommended! Even Lucie, from the country who really knows their bread, agreed that this was amazing. We grabbed some more substantial food from the stalls, Lucie had a pork belly roll with crackling and apple sauce from Roast - and I'm happy to say she was very impressed with the English food (WIN!). Luckily, just as we were finishing our food, the sun decided to make an appearance, so we walked towards Embankment along the river so Lucie could see some of the sights.

We walked all the way along and took the tube to South Kensington where we felt we needed a sit down so I dragged Lucie into Le Pain Quotidien because, even though it's not strictly 'English' (at all), I LOVE LOVE LOVE their scones, which are very English.

After tea, coffee and the biggest scone known to mankind, Lucie and I sat in our little corner seat and chatted, and tried not to fall asleep. Eventually, we dragged ourselves back out into the cold and round the corner to the V&A museum, which I have never actually been to before!

It's amazing, there's an impressive mix of old and modern art. Lucie and I spent a lot of time looking at the fashion through the ages section.

I fell a little bit in love with the polka dot dress.

Lucie tried on a retro hoop and petticoat, doors must have been a lot wider back then!

Unfortunately, we left it a bit late and the museum closed too soon for us to see everything. So, we headed to Covent Garden for some dinner and pubbage. So, I hope I showed Lucie enough of London...it's funny how hosting a tourist can make you realise how little you actually enjoy the city you're in...I'm going to have to make more of an effort to get out and about!

Fuerzabruta!

How to describe this show...it's sort of like cirque du soleil but...very different.

Fuerzabruta Feb 2014

It's at the Roundhouse near Chalk Farm at the moment, though not for much longer (info here), if you can get tickets I fully recommend you do. It was just so incredibly awesome.

Fuerzabruta Feb 2014

I filed in with the rest of the audience, not quite knowing what to expect, when a light behind me came on...and the music started.

Fuerzabruta Feb 2014
The music is amazing. It's full of energy, and sets the pace for the show.

Fuerzabruta Feb 2014

Things happen without you really knowing what's going on, lights come on, illuminating different parts of the show and then someone is on the walls!

Pools lower themselves above you as the performers go from serene water dancing to crazy throwing themselves around - it's CRAZY!

Fuerzabruta Feb 2014
When the pools turn up try and get underneath them for when it lowers, we were in the corner so didn't get as good a view as some of the others.

Fuerzabruta Feb 2014
Fuerzabruta Feb 2014
This bit was really cool, the sheet has to be passed over the audience and then inflated, the performers run around on top of it and come through...

There is so much more than I took pictures of because you don't want to spend all your time there taking pictures, believe me, you just want to marvel at all the awesome things going on around you. Near the end there was rain...and Ben didn't hesitate to drag me into it to dance, we were soaked, covered in confetti and generally pretty happy! It was such a good show!

Isobel's Birthday Tea

My friend Isobel, I've probably mentioned before, is a hell of a cook. Every time I'm invited over for dinner I walk the short distance from the station wondering what delicious concoctions I'm in for. So, for her birthday, Isobel hosted an afternoon tea event. I was expecting some yummy home cooking...but nothing as impressive as the sight that greeted us in the kitchen....

And if that weren't enough, a glass of bubbles was placed into my hand almost immediately....

How amazing? After everyone indulged we hopped over to the pub to watch England beat Scotland in the Six Nations (whoop!), and after several drinks, Isobel and Tim invited us back over to continue the merriment, which we did, with slightly less decorum than earlier...

Work Party

What is it about work parties that more often than not, mean you get completely trashed? I made a very silly mistake and got caught up drinking then chatting to people so that I completely neglected to eat a proper meal. Not smart. And I cursed myself repeatedly as I closed my eyes on the most torturous train journey home, not to mention feeling very sorry for myself all day. BUT, before that, it was all a good laugh....

Despite having to get creative while trying to get ready in the office, we managed to throw a look together that wasn't too bad.
inVentiv Work Party Jan 14

And, after hitting a bar in town before hand (probably where the problem started), we arrived for the party...only slightly later than everyone else.

inVentiv Work Party Jan 14

The night then turned into a blur of dancing, talking, drinking and... my being very thankful I would not have to face these people on Monday since the party coincided with my last day in the office!

Well, at least I wasn't the only who drank a bit too much. Aw man. I'm going to miss working there. Literally the most awesome people - but I know I'll see them again. No one escapes me...
