Film Review: Seven Psychopaths

Well, we all had planned to go see something else but the screening sold out...as such we found ourselves buying tickets for the Seven Psychopaths, not knowing exactly what to expect, and having fairly low expectations considering Colin Farrell was starring.

Maybe the low expectations contributed but I really enjoyed this film. It's a touch gorier than the films I'd usually go to see but what's brilliant about it is how funny it is.

To give you an idea, Colin Farrell is a screen writer who is suffering writers block, all he has is the title, Seven Psychopaths. In his quest to create these characters, and with the help of his friend, played (hilariously) by Sam Rockwell, he finds himself encountering actual psychopaths. It really had some genius moments.

Four popcorns out of five (cos popcorn is awesome), and at the time of writing a respectful 7.4 on imdb.

Snow Day

So the snow hit Europe about the same time...Paris got it bad the evening after the morning London got it. I was not happy. And, to be honest, I had no plans to leave the house. I hate snow. It's cold, wet and slippery. There is no better excuse for staying in bed and watching films...however, it did occur to me I was probably missing out on some lovely 'Paris in the snow' pictures. So, when Sophie said her and Sol were going to go to Pere Lachaise, I thought, fine.

Snow Day Jan 2012
Ooh, a snow covered metro sign. I have to admit, I didn't care.

Snow Day Jan 2012
Snow is treacherous...and I didn't trust my boots on them...with good cause as well, as I did a near-fall a couple of times.

Snow Day Jan 2012
Throw a snowball half-heartedly...

Snow Day Jan 2012
OK - we're done. Pere Lachaise was closed cos the snow made it too 'glissant' for us not-so-sure-footed pedestrians. We did the second best cultural thing we could do.

Snow Day Jan 2012
A long lunch with wine. Ah, the French do some things right! Turns out there's a fantastic little restaurant across the way from me called La Factorie.

Snow Day Jan 2012
I can't seem to find a website but it's just across the road from the pere lachaise metro stop. I can confirm they do a hell of a burger.

Snow Day Jan 2012
And a lurvely creme brulée!

Snow Day Jan 2012
Not to mention it's clearly a popular place with the locals...

That was enough snow for me for one day! Me and Sophie ran back to my house for dry socks, warm tea and Dreamgirls. THAT'S how you deal with snow people!

Film Review: Django Unchained (2012)

What can I say? If you haven't seen it, go see it. The film is a massive 2 hour and 45 minute commitment but it is unlikely you'll sit there thinking, God is it going to end soon?

I do enjoy Tarantino's films, though sometimes think he can push it too far and purely for shock value (am I the only one that thought the gimp bit in Pulp Fiction was entirely unnecessary?) but I think this film was just pure awesomeness. There's obviously violence but it's not toooo extreme, by Tarantino standards anyway, I looked away a couple of times but that's it.

What I loved about this film was that it was funnier than previous Tarantino films. I'm not going to ruin any bits but I spent a whole lot of time laughing at this movie. Go, enjoy.

It's a five out of five on my self-created popcorn scale and imdb.com recognising excellence with 8.7 at time of writing.

London Baby! Part Two

So...Friday morning, rolled into work an hour later than usual. That night we had booked tickets to see Les Miserables!

Opening night and it was amazing. Many many tears then off to bed because I had the most mental Saturday prepared.

January Week in London 2013
So, in order to be good and efficient I organised a lunch time drinks affair, and invited everyone! These are most of them, obviously the boyfriend is busy texting his bit on the side.

January Week in London 2013
I have a good gaggly mix of friends, Naomi and Isobel are Paris peeps!

January Week in London 2013
Faye and I have been friends since first year of Uni...which is nearly ten years now...scary stuff.

January Week in London 2013
Naomi told us a hilarious story about how she has breasts...and after that me and Ben had to leave for an engagement party...what we didn't realise was that we'd be followed....

January Week in London 2013
Oh Chris, you've got to stop having such a good time!

January Week in London 2013
Steph, Fox and Ben, rocking the classic robot. And the night took a turn for the worst...I blame Steph even though it was clearly me shouting TEQUILLA!

London Baby! - Part One

I don't know if it's been obvious with my countless film reviews but lately, I've been taking it easy. Trips to the cinema have been the extent of my outings and a chilled drink with friends the other day but generally, when I'm in Paris, I don't do a whole lot of strenuous activity. This is what I love and hate about Paris. In London, I was non-stop, it was constant, dance classes, kickboxing, running, dinners, cinema trips and nights out...I honestly couldn't have stayed in to watch a film if I tried!

Anyway, there's a very good reason I was taking it easy - I have just returned from a week long trip to London where I literally did not have a day to sit and chill...except the day that I did...but anyway. Here's my crazy week...

Two seconds I was dragging this beast before I decided I was definitely taking a taxi as opposed to a metro to the station...arrive in London late Tuesday, not exciting, tea then bed. Wednesday was my first day back in my UK office (delightful town of Maidenhead)...

We used to be a huge team but now it's just Janet (background) and Kiran in the UK. I brought back a galette des rois - whoever finds the figurine has to wear the crown! Wednesday night was a dance class with Faye which was then a quick drink...which turned into a fair amount of drinks...

Oddly, or not so oddly I suppose, I've developed a taste for French wine, so some of the Australian/Chilean ones Steph and I put away were a bit fruity for my liking....not that it stopped me drinking half a bottle and a large glass...which leads me to Thursday.

January Week in London 2013
It all went so wrong on Thursday. The plan was to get an early night. Some cocktails in Thirst bar. Followed by DELICIOUSNESS at Kettners.

January Week in London 2013
I think I had pork...

January Week in London 2013
A rather blurry me had wine...

January Week in London 2013
Sarah's delicious steak!

January Week in London 2013
And delicious Sarah...or not. And that's how Jenn always sits to eat dinner. So, a lovely meal then an early night. This was the plan...so how the hell did we end up here...

January Week in London 2013
This would be my first trip to G-A-Y...and my God, was it awesome!

January Week in London 2013
Yep, pretty much.

January Week in London 2013
HA! Far too much fun for a Thursday night!

London week to be continued!

Père Lachaise

It's going to sound a little strange, but my favourite tourist place in Paris, may well be it's famous cemetery, Père Lachaise.

Pere LaChaise
Most people know it for housing Jim Morrison's grave or Oscar Wilde's, it's also the burial site of Edith Piaf and Chopin, but on this gray, overcast Sunday, I decided to wander around the rest of the cemetery and skip the 'popular' graves. I have to say the memorials to those who died during the Second World War are phenomenal.

There were other graves too that I particularly liked. And I definitely think it's worth a visit if you're going to Paris. It's very peaceful, you only come across chatting people every now and again, and it's a nice walk, unless you're not such a big fan of graveyards...you weirdo.

Film Review: The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)

I haven't read the book but after the film, I really intend to. I definitely recommend this film to the kind of people who liked...Garden State. It's a film about the 'alternative' students in an American highschool so that's the typical part, unappreciated, picked on etc. but it's not your typical story.

Also have to say I was really impressed by Emma Watson in this film. I don't think I'm the only one who had kind of written her off as an actress in the Harry Potter films (no one needs to use their eyebrows that much) but in this film I really enjoyed her. Pretty much flawless American accent as well.

And as a last bonus point, loved the soundtrack. Go see.

Three popcorns out of five and 8.3 on imdb.

Film Review: Life of Pi

If you're thinking you read the book and didn't like it - you shouldn't write off the film. I found the book really slow and pretty dull but luckily, the film skips straight into the interesting parts of the book. Not to mention it is an absolutely stunning film visually.

Try not to find out too much about it if you haven't read the book. All you need to know is it's about a boy who is on his way from India to Canada on a boat with his family and their zoo animals when it is caught in a terrible storm and sinks. He is left on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger and tries to survive in the hope of finding land.

I really enjoyed this film, so different from anything else out at the moment. Fantastic performances and I will definitely be buying it when it's available on DVD, even though it's not one you'd sit down to watch too often.

Film Review: Pitch Perfect (2012)

OK - so it looks like a singing version of 'Step Up' but I have to say, this film is well worth a chance. It's got some seriously funny bits to it, but I have to admit it's the kind of film that more appeals to girls (a group of girls being the main characters) but any boyfriend that might be dragged to the cinema will enjoy a few laughs as well.
The highlight is Rebel Wilson. Playing a similar character to the one in Bridesmaids but she's hilarious...not that Anna Kendrick isn't good, she definitely is, but again, it's the same character we saw in Twilight or Scott Pilgrim, an indifferent sarcastic bitch. I like her though. And sue me, I like the song numbers.

The story line's predictable but the laughs and perfomances are good.

Four popcorns out of five and sporting an impressive 7.2 on imdb.
